(January 4, 2009)--Officials and witnesses said a series of powerful earthquakes early Sunday killed at least three people and injured dozens more in remote eastern Indonesia.

The director of a local hospital says three bodies have been found including that of a 10-year-old girl.

He said another 19 patients are at a hospital with broken bones, cuts, crushed fingers and other injuries.

A nurse at a navy hospital treating 20 quake patients says several stories of a hotel collapsed.

A search was underway for possible trapped victims.

Officials said power lines were cut, several buildings badly were damaged and flights to the regional capital of Papua, Manokwari city, were canceled.

The original early morning 7.6-magnitude quake was followed by a 7.5 quake and other aftershocks.
