FARGO, N.D. (March 23, 2009)--Officials were issuing urgent pleas Monday for volunteers to help with sandbagging around Fargo, North Dakota, where major flooding could occur this week.

The National Weather Service says the Red River was about 3 feet above flood stage in Fargo and more water was on the way.

It rained Sunday.

The river is expected to crest between 39 feet and 41 feet in the Fargo-Moorhead area by Friday, a day earlier and a foot higher than projected.

City officials had planned to fill about 1 million sandbags but now believe they'll need almost twice that many.

National Guard troops, jail inmates and even members of the North Dakota State football team will be helping with the flood fight.

Hundreds of North Dakota State University students lined up to help Monday and high school students were pitching in, as well.
