FARGO, N.D. (March 31, 2009)--Officials in Fargo, N.D., hope Tuesday’s bad weather doesn't damage the dikes and levees that are holding back the swollen Red River.

The forecast is for another 7 to 14 inches of heavy, wet snow, on top of the 6 inches that fell Monday, and winds are expected to increase to around 35 mph.

Residents have been working in two-to-four-hour shifts, keeping an eye out for any cracks or other signs that could indicate problems with the dikes.

Meanwhile, the flood threat continues to take an economic toll. Some Fargo businesses paid their workers while they joined other volunteers in filling sandbags but other places couldn't afford to pay.

With many businesses still closed, workers who go paycheck to paycheck are having a tough time.
