FARGO, N.D. (April 8, 2009)--Engineers are confident that Fargo's sandbagged levees can handle a second crest of the Red River that's still about a week away.
The newest crest projection came in lower than earlier estimates.
Fargo residents resume sandbagging along the swollen river in advance of a second crest expected in the next 10 days.
City officials asked for volunteers to help make sandbags Wednesday morning at the Fargodome parking lot.
They hope to bump up their inventory to 500,000 sandbags to be used to shore up dikes and fill leaks.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that the Red River will crest again at Fargo between 38 and 40 feet between April 16 and 18.
The Red River gave Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., a major scare last month before cresting just shy of 41 feet.
The two cities largely escaped damage after a massive sandbagging effort that raised their dike protection to 43 feet.
