VALLEY CITY, N.D. (April 15, 2009)--The North Dakota community of Valley City is bracing as the Sheyenne River continues to rise.
The Sheyenne has already set a record, rising to 20.6 feet Tuesday and it’s projected to crest around 22 feet later in the week.
A U.S. Geological Survey official says the flood risk could last a month.
A state senator, Larry Robinson, says community volunteers, students and others are helping emergency crews in trying to hold back the river.
Classes were canceled at public schools and at Valley City State University, and students were helping with sandbagging.
The mayor of Valley City called for the evacuation of sick and elderly residents, as well as those living in low-lying areas.
Mayor Mary Lee Nielson asked affected residents to leave their homes by Wednesday evening, saying that would help keep emergency routes free of traffic.
