MIAMI (May 28, 2009)-- Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center issued their first advisory on Tropical Depression Number One at 10 am Thursday, four days before the official start of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season.

The depression was located east of the Chesapeake Bay, about 300 miles due south of Providence, Rhode Island.

T.D. One was moving northeast at 17 mph, away from the North American coastline.

Forecasters expect the depression to strengthen into a tropical storm late Thursday or Friday before dissipating over the colder waters of the North Atlantic Ocean on Saturday.

If winds reach tropical storm force, the storm will be given the name "Ana".

Hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Western Atlantic Ocean doesn't officially begin until June 1st.

Ana would be only the 19th tropical storm to develop in the month of May since 1851.
