GALVESTON (June 26, 2009)--Dead trees that need to be removed for Hurricane Ike recovery in Galveston will be hauled away starting the week of July 6.

Supplemental federal funds will pay for the removal.

Ike swamped parts of Galveston as the storm ripped through Southeast Texas on Sept. 13, 2008.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Friday that debris removal crews initially will cut down dead trees in the island city's right of way.

Dead trees on private property will follow, subject to restrictions.

The trees must be more than 6 inches in diameter and within 75 feet of a structure or 15 feet of a driveway.

The Texas Forest Service will use orange dots to mark dead trees in the public right of way, within 16 feet of public streets.
