BEAUMONT (July 10, 2009)--Demolition work is underway on more than 100 houses in west Jefferson County damaged by 2008's Hurricane Ike.

A majority of families in the Labelle community are taking part in a government buyout.

The Sept. 13 hurricane flooded an area known as Country Road Estates, west of Beaumont, where 114 homes are being torn down.

A review after Ike revealed an error in decades-ago survey information and that some houses were constructed too low, on the flood plain, hindering them from receiving permits to rebuild.

Demolition started this week.
