CORPUS CHRISTI (July 24, 2009)--Another batch of newly hatched Kemp's ridley sea turtles is heading for the Gulf of Mexico and the release of more endangered turtles was planned Friday from Malaquite Beach on Padre Island National Seashore.

More than 425 visitors crowded the seashore Thursday to witness the release of 245 Kemp's ridley hatchlings.

National Parks Service biologist Donna Shaver said Thursday's event was the greatest number of baby turtles in a single release this season.

Turtle patrollers and park visitors have discovered 117 sea turtle nests since May.

My family was vacationing on Padre Island National Seashore when our kids spotted a Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle coming ashore. We called the park office and a "Turtle Patrol" vehicle arrived shortly. After the female laid her eggs my kids were allowed to participate in the harvesting of the eggs and transporting them to the hatchery. Just so happened that a couple of dozen babies were scheduled for release that day so we accompanied the turtle patrol back out to the beach and the kids were allowed to help in the release of the baby turtles. This was ten years ago and they still talk excitedly about their adventure. Memories of a lifetime. My youngest daughter has aspirations of majoring in Marine Biology when she goes to collage. She is still awestruck by the adventure when she was only 7 years old.
