(August 15, 2009)—Forecasters were keeping an eye Saturday on a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean and a tropical storm and a tropical depression in the Atlantic.

Tropical Depression No. 3 is the newest system to warrant attention.

It formed in the eastern Atlantic about 740 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and was moving toward the west Saturday at about 17 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 55 miles per hour.

It’s expected to become a tropical storm later Saturday or on Sunday.

Meanwhile Saturday, Tropical Storm Ana was moving quickly to the west with little change in strength.

Saturday morning, Ana was about 920 miles east of the Leeward Islands, where a tropical storm watch could be issued later in the day.

Ana is expected to turn toward the west-northwest within the next couple of days and that could bring the storm’s center near the Leeward Islands on Monday.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Guillermo gained some steam Saturday as it churned over open water about 1,525 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California.

Guillermo was moving toward the west-northwest at about 15 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of about 125 miles per hour.

The hurricane is expected to weaken on Sunday and Monday as it moves over cooler waters, forecasters said.
