TAIPEI, Taiwan (August 17, 2009)--More U.S. aid has arrived in typhoon-ravaged Taiwan.

A relief team backed by heavy-lift helicopters will help local authorities get aid to the hundreds of people feared stranded in mountain villages more than a week after Typhoon Morakot hammered the island.

A Taiwanese army spokesman says more than 200 people were rescued Monday.

A U.S. team arrived on a helicopter that took off from the USS Denver in waters off southern Taiwan to help out with the effort.

A U.S. defense official says the Denver itself is expected to arrive later in the day, carrying four helicopters all of which are termed heavy lift choppers capable of carrying equipment to remote mountainous areas that were cut off in the storm.

The U.S. has already given money and delivered relief goods to Taiwan.
