LOS ANGELES (August 27, 2009)--Firefighters in Southern California were expecting another day of hot, extremely dry weather as they battled two wildfires northeast of Los Angeles.
With no sea breeze to clear the air, the flames left a smoky haze across the Los Angeles Basin and into San Bernardino County.
Because of the unhealthy air conditions, officials in some areas advised people to avoid strenuous activities, indoors and out.
Meanwhile, crews were working to contain a wildfire in a rural area of Northern California.
The fast-moving wildfire started yesterday about 20 miles southwest of King City in Monterey County.
Officials say it burned a mobile home and more than 3 square miles of grassy, rolling hills.
Residents of 20 homes near the tiny community of Lockwood evacuated voluntarily.
The fire was 30 percent contained early Thursday.
