CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (August 29, 2009)--Danny has been downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression but is still expected to produce a second straight weekend of dangerous surf along the East Coast.
Tropical storm watches for the North Carolina coast have been discontinued.
The National Hurricane Center says Danny is being absorbed by a low-pressure system and weakening.
Early Saturday, the remnants of Danny were located about 80 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.
Maximum sustained winds were near 35 miles per hour.
Large swells from the system were still expected to produce dangerous surf and treacherous rip currents from the Carolinas to New England over the next several days.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Jimena has formed in the Pacific Ocean south of Mexico.
Jimena, the 10th named storm of the Pacific season, is expected to get stronger and could become a hurricane over the next day or two.
