AUSTIN (September 5, 2009)--The severe drought is drying up one of the most treasured natural resources in Texas, the Barton Springs Pool on spring-fed Barton Creek, which draws more than 400,000 visitors from around the world each year to Zilker Park in southwestern Austin.
The drought that's dragging into its third year in parts of Central and South Texas is drying up creeks and other groundwater sources that feed many springs.
The Barton Springs are flowing at about 25 percent of their average rate, threatening drinking water supplies, endangered salamanders and the swimming hole where the water is always about 68 degrees.
Cities have already ordered residents to cut back on water use, but water officials say more restrictions may be needed.
