MIAMI (September, 8 2009) - Tropical Storm Fred is getting stronger a day after forming in the eastern Atlantic.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Linda is moving slowly with no change in strength far out over the Pacific.

Tropical Storm Fred's maximum sustained winds increased to near 50 mph early Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Fred is expected to strengthen and could become a hurricane in the next few days.

Fred is centered about 285 miles southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and moving west near 15 mph.

In the Pacific, Linda's maximum sustained winds remain near 60 mph. The storm is centered about 1,320 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.
