MIAMI (September 9, 2009)--Hurricane Fred has grown into a Category 3 storm, forecaster said Wednesday.

It's still far out over the Atlantic, and poses no threat to land.

The storm's projected five-day path will keep it over the open ocean until it loses steam.

Before then, however, additional strengthening is expected.

Wednesday morning, Fred was about 540 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands moving toward the northwest at near 13 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of about 120 miles per hour.

Meanwhile Wednesday, Tropical Storm Linda was moving slowly far out over the Pacific.

Linda's maximum sustained winds remain near 60 miles per hour.

The storm is centered about 1,305 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and is moving north-northwest near 2 miles per hour.
