FORT WORTH (September 29, 2009)--The same El Nino responsible for a calmer hurricane season is expected to bring a wetter, colder winter to Texas and the southern United States, forecasters say.
Weather officials say El Nino weather patterns could help ease the Texas drought, which has caused more than $3.6 billion in crop and livestock losses since late 2008.
But National Weather Service forecasters also warn of increased chances of flooding and more snow than usual in Texas this winter and they say the more weather information people have, the more resilient they'll be.
El Nino is the periodic warming of the central Pacific Ocean.
