MANILA, Philippines (October 10, 2009)--Rescuers have dug out six survivors and have found more bodies buried under landslides in the northern Philippines.
Authorities now say at least 225 people have died in the latest natural disaster to hit the Philippines, which has been pounded by back-to-back storms.
More than 600 have died since the first storm hit the main island of Luzon on Sept. 26, causing the worst flooding in more than 40 years.
Workers are rushing to clear mountain roads to aid relief efforts.
The U.S. military is providing help.
A Marine spokesman says helicopters are standing by to help deliver aid to areas cut off by flooded highways.
He said Marine choppers have already flown over the flood-ravaged region to assess the damage and find locations for a medical mission and food distribution.
According to the spokesman, more than 200 Marines and sailors on the USS Harpers Ferry and USS Tortuga are prepared to deploy for rescue and relief operations.
Heavy equipment also will be brought in to help clear the roads littered with debris.
