MANILA, Philippines (October 13, 2009)--The UN’s humanitarian chief says the UN will ask for more aid to the Philippines in the wake of massive destruction from back-to-back storms, in addition to $44 million already pledged for the Southeast Asian nation.

A typhoon on the heels of last month's storm triggered landslides and the worst flooding in 40 years in the northern Philippines.

At least 669 people have died since Sept. 26.

About 6 million people have been affected and the damage ran into hundreds of millions of dollars.

John Holmes, the U.N. undersecretary for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief says the U.N. will revise its appeal for $74 million in three to four weeks, and is ready to call for more aid after a final assessment of the damage.
