WASHINGTON (October 15, 2009)—National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters say the Midwest and Northern United States will likely get a warmer winter, while the Southeast should expect the opposite with cooler and wetter weather.

In Thursday's winter outlook, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says an El Nino weather event will affect America's winter temperatures.

Forecasters predict warmer than usual temperatures would reach a swath from western Washington to Michigan, dipping south to central New Mexico.

They also say cooler temperatures are expected from southern Texas to Washington, D.C. Wetter weather is forecast for California and the South.

Dry weather is predicted for parts of the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

Other places, such as the Northeast, can go either way.
