The first slide happened around 6 am and was minor. Cleanup was nearly complete when workers heard more cracking and cleared the area. Crew were on scene to report on the earlier slide. This incident follows an earlier event in North Carolina that closed Interstate 40. The combined incidents highlight the need for an alternate route through the East Tennessee Mountains. This was the second of the rock slides in that same spot. The camera crews from the local news were out there to video tape the rocks from the first and happened to catch the second. Just a matter of right place right time

More than likely, there were rocks already falling onto the roadway and it was closed off and monitored for further activity. Not very unlikely at all around here.
