RICHMOND, Va. (February 4, 2010)—Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency ahead of a winter storm expected early Friday through Saturday.
Forecasters are calling for up to three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain for much of western and southwestern Virginia and heavy rains and high winds in southeastern Virginia.
Closer to the nation's capital, forecasters say the potential exists for the storm to be as bad or worse than one Dec. 19 that dropped as much as 20 inches of snow in the mid-Atlantic region.
Wednesday's emergency declaration authorizes state agencies to assist local governments responding to a storm that could bring high winds and as much as 20 inches of snow to the northern and western parts of the state.
McDonnell said road crews and the Virginia National Guard are prepared to respond, and is urging residents to do the same.
