GALVESTON (February 17, 2010)--Galveston officials are worried that a year and a half after Hurricane Ike battered their island city, the storm could land another blow.
They’re concerned about the possibility of losing millions in state and federal funding if this year's U.S. Census count shows the city's population has dropped to less than 50,000, which is a benchmark used to determine how much funding a community gets.
Galveston asked Census officials to include in the city's population count residents who have temporarily moved off the island since Ike hit, but Census officials say they can't make an exception for natural disasters.
On Thursday, Census officials will stop in Galveston as part of a tour encouraging Americans to take part in the Census.
