Flooding Death Toll Rises On Resort Island
The death toll from floods and landslides is rising on the resort island of Madeira.

(February 22, 2010)—Portuguese rescuers worked through the night on the resort island of Madeira, where flooding and landslides have claimed more than 40 lives.
Residents walked down muddy streets Monday to view he damage left by Saturday’s powerful rainstorm.
Officials say at least 42 people are dead and fear more bodies may have been washed into the ocean.
At least four people are confirmed to be missing.
The rainstorm on Saturday unleashed flooding and mudslides on the island, washing out bridges and burying houses under tons of mud.
Many roads were partially destroyed or were blocked by rocks, tree, mud and debris.
At least 120 people were hurt and about 240 lost their homes.
