WASHINGTON (March 5, 2010)--Experts say methane is bubbling out of the frozen Arctic faster than was expected and researchers attribute the release of the gas on a warming climate.

The methane was trapped in the permafrost over time.

The findings are in a report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

A co-author of the report says the amount of methane coming out of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf is comparable to the amount coming out of the world's oceans.

Concerns about global warming have centered on rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but scientists say methane can be 30 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.
