After Sandy, Rescuers Find They Are Also Victims

NEW YORK (November 13, 2012)--Hundreds of New York City police officers and firefighters who spent the past few weeks helping a storm-battered city get back on its feet are also dealing with personal losses related to the floods.

NYPD and FDNY say an estimated 1,700 members of their departments had homes, vehicles or other property severely damaged or lost when Sandy came ashore.

NYPD Sgt. Kathy Cowan had 4 feet of floodwaters and sewage course through her home on the Rockaway peninsula during the storm.

She says being "the victim" in the disaster is driving her crazy.

The five unions that represent NYPD officers and commanders have set up a charity, the New York Police Disaster Relief Fund, to get aid to the hardest-hit members of the department.
