Body Recovered From River After Semi Slides Off Snow-Covered Highway

MENOMONIE, Wis. (March 5, 2013)--One body was recovered from a river in Wisconsin and searchers were seeking a second after an 18-wheeler slid off a snow-covered interstate into the water Tuesday, authorities said.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said the body, believed to be the driver of the truck, was pulled from the Red Cedar River near Menomonie.

A second person believed to have been in the truck was still missing.

The patrol said the rig slipped off Interstate 94 in western Wisconsin this morning, went down an embankment and into the river.

The storm was making travel difficult through a large swath of the Midwest.

About 600 snowplows were on duty in northern Illinois, where the governor urged people to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.

Nearly 1,000 flights were canceled at Chicago airports.

The storm started Sunday in Montana, hit the Dakotas and Minnesota Monday and was moving through Wisconsin and Illinois Tuesday on its way to the East Coast.
