WACO (November 14, 2012)--The Brazos River Authority wants water customers from Georgetown and Whitney to know that a Stage 1 Drought Watch has been declared.
The drought watch specifically affects Possum Kingdom, Granbury, Whitney, Proctor and Georgetown lakes.
The proclamation is a result of prolonged dry weather conditions in the upper portion of the Brazos basin and is a response to new drought trigger levels established by the BRA's updated Drought Contingency Plan approved by the board of directors Oct. 29, a spokesperson said.
Lake Georgetown reached its drought-watch trigger following 30 days of pumping water from Stillhouse Hollow Lake to help maintain water supply.
Lake Whitney has been below the new Stage 1 Drought Watch trigger storage capacity of 561,290 acre-feet since early September.
The BRA requests that customers who use water from these reservoirs activate their individual Drought Contingency Plan, increase public education efforts on ways to reduce water usage, and notify others of the situation.
The BRA will notify its customers should Stage 2 triggering conditions be met.
