NEW YORK (April 1, 2013)--The rides are open at Coney Island, New York City's most famous beach destination, but despite the traditional Palm Sunday opening, many seasonal businesses at the beach getaway are still reeling in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
They’re hoping for good weather and large crowds to make up for money spent on Sandy repairs.
D.J. Vourderis got the iconic Deno's Famous Wonder Wheel open in time, but his family's business is about $500,000 in debt after borrowing to redo all the electrical wiring on the Ferris wheel.
They also replaced 24 new bumper cars and redesigned the entire Spook-A-Rama ride, which was waterlogged.
Eldorado Auto Skooter owner Gordon Lee says the arcade is open, but has 40 percent fewer games.
