Could Superstorm Sandy Change U.S. Role In U.N. Climate Talks?

STOCKHOLM (November 24, 2012)--Activists say they are cautiously optimistic that the U.S. will be more than a disinterested bystander in the next round of United Nations climate talks after a year with a monster storm and scorching heat waves.

The talks resume Monday with a two-week conference in Qatar.

Many scientists say the weather the U.S. experienced will occur more often on a warming planet.

The cautious optimism among climate activists comes as a re-elected President Barack Obama is again talking about global warming.

The climate officials and environment ministers meeting in Qatar will not come up with an answer to the global temperature rise that is already melting Arctic sea ice and permafrost and raising and acidifying the seas.

They will focus on side issues, such as extending the Kyoto protocol, an expiring emissions pact with a dwindling number of members, and ramping up climate financing for poor nations.
