Crews Work To Restore Power In Wake Of Winter Storm

AMARILLO (February 26, 2013)--Utility crews were working to restore power in the wake of the crippling storm that dumped a record amount of snow on the Panhandle and produced strong winds throughout much of the state.

Xcel Energy says 8,600 customers in the Panhandle and New Mexico were without power at the height of Monday's storm, but the number dwindled Tuesday morning to fewer than 24.

The Amarillo area received just more than 19 inches of snow.

Interstate 40 remained closed Tuesday through the Panhandle from New Mexico east to Oklahoma, but Interstate 27 has reopened.

The same storm system brought severe winds in excess of 50 miles per hour to Central Texas, leaving thousands without power, mostly in Bell County.

Strong gusts also swept into North Texas.

More than 100,000 utility customers in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri remained without power Tuesday.
