WASHINGTON, Ill. (November 18, 2013) The mayor of Washington, Ill., estimates that as many as 500 homes in his town were either damaged or destroyed by a wave of fierce storms that produced damaging winds and tornadoes in 12 states yesterday.
“Everybody's without power, but some people are without everything,” Mayor Gary Manier said.
At least six people in Illinois were killed and dozens more were injured.
Washington resident Curt Zehr says his wife and adult son scrambled into their basement when Zehr spotted a funnel cloud.
Zehr says moments later, the house was gone, but his family was uninjured.
Forecasters say Illinois was the hardest hit.
The National Weather Service said as many as 40 tornadoes may have hit the Midwest.
