Emergency Managers, Event Operators Talk Severe Weather

NORMAN, Okla. (March 7, 2013)--Managers of events ranging from concerts to NFL games say weather events such the sudden gust in 2011 that toppled an Indiana concert stage and killed seven people have pushed them to learn more about extreme weather and to develop more detailed plans on what to do before and when a storm hits.

More than 40 emergency managers and event operators met Tuesday and Wednesday at the National Weather Center in Norman, Okla., for an annual preparedness conference.

Five years ago, there were about a dozen participants.

Harold Hansen of the International Association of Venue Managers says the 2011 accident was a wake-up call to the industry and event organizers understand they need to have a plan before the weather turns bad.
