MIAMI (September 11, 2013)—Tropical Storm Humberto strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday to become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.
Humberto's maximum sustained winds early Wednesday were near 75 miles per hour and the National Hurricane Center said the hurricane could gain more strength before it begins to weaken on Thursday.
Humberto was centered about 310 miles west-northwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and was moving north-northwest at near 8 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Gabrielle was weakening Wednesday as it moved away from Bermuda after hitting the wealthy British territory with wind, rain and rough surf.
Gabrielle's maximum sustained winds decreased to near 50 miles per hour.
