Fish Are Starving In Baffin Bay; Water To Be Studied

CORPUS CHRISTI (March 6, 2013)--The water quality in Baffin Bay in South Texas has gotten so bad that some fish are starving and a study is planned in hopes of improving conditions.

Tests later this month will look at salinity, agriculture or other runoff and the food chain.

A 2010 fish kill and a persistent brown tide bloom have raised concerns at the bay about 25 miles south of Corpus Christi.

A group called Friends of Baffin Bay has grown into a consortium led by the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and involving the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

Marine biology officials at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will also assist.

Kleberg County Commissioners will pay $11,500 toward the study.

Bay supporters are also seeking private funds.
