ST. GEORGE ISLAND, Fla. (June 26, 2012)--Parts of Interstate 10, the main interstate highway across northern Florida, were closed Tuesday because of flooding as Tropical Storm Debby threatened to dump as much as two feet of rain on the region.
After raking Florida's Gulf coast with high winds and heavy rain, Debby promised to bring more of the same Tuesday today as it moved slowly on a path forecast to take it over the state and into the Atlantic by Friday.
The National Hurricane Center said Debby was about 85 miles west of Cedar Key, Fla., and moving eastward near 3 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 45 miles per hour.
The Florida Highway Patrol closed portions of Interstate 10 in north Florida early Tuesday because of flooding and warned motorists to use extreme caution on other parts of the highway.
Practically parked off Florida's Gulf Coast since the weekend, Debby raked the Tampa Bay area with high wind and heavy rain Monday in a drenching that could top 2 feet over the next few days and has already led to flooding.
Forecasters cautioned that Debby is a large tropical cyclone spreading strong winds and heavy rains at great distances from its center.
