Galveston Pavilion Destroyed By Hurricane Ike Set To Reopen

GALVESTON (December 10, 2012)--A park pavilion in Galveston destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008 is expected to open next month with $1.6 million in upgrades.

The Apffel Park pavilion will include a new boardwalk.

Workers began adding wooden framing around the concrete pylons standing near the entrance to East Beach last week.

Park official Kelly de Schaun says federal funds are paying for 90 percent of the project and the rest of the money comes from city park board funds.

A portion of the pavilion will include updated bathrooms, showers and concession stands.

Portable toilets had been placed at the park during the rebuilding.

The beach has parking space for around 7,000 vehicles.
