GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 24, 2013)--The Grand River in Grand Rapids, Mich., was expected to fall below flood stage Wednesday, but it’s not clear when the hundreds of people who were forced to flee will be allowed to return to their homes.
Across the Midwest, other waterways remain above flood level.
The water has been higher than ever before along the Illinois River in central Illinois.
Swollen rivers have already swallowed some neighborhoods and farmland.
The National Weather Service expects many of the waterways to remain high into next month, straining levees holding back the rivers.
