ATHENS, Greece (June 17, 2012)--Forest fires across southern Greece appeared to be abating Sunday, but authorities said high winds are spurring occasional flare-ups and the danger is far from over.
Officials say more than 30 fires broke out across the country Saturday, but most were under control Sunday.
The outbreak followed several days of hot temperatures followed by strong winds across most of Greece.
Authorities say three firefighters were injured battling a major fire south of Athens that burned some 5,500 acres of brush and forest, destroyed 15 houses and damaged more than 100 others.
Forest and brush fires are common in the hot, dry summer months in Greece.
In 2007, more than 60 people were killed when forest fires scorched the country's south.
