Hiker Who Got Lost In Desert Heat Dies

KANAB, Utah (July 23, 2013)--Elisabeth Ann Bervel, 27, of Mesa, Ariz., who was hiking on a popular southern Utah trail with her husband, died after getting lost in the desert heat, authorities said.

Kane County Emergency Services officials said Bervel died Monday after hiking what’s known as The Wave.

Deputies say Bervel and her husband won permits to hike in the restricted area seven months ago and took the trek to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.

Officials say the couple lost the trail a few times on the way back, and Bervel became fatigued.

A helicopter was dispatched to the scene about 2 p.m., but officials say Bervel was in cardiac arrest by the time rescuers arrived and died.

The Bervels have two sons, ages 4 and 5, deputies said.
