MIAMI (July 31, 2013)--Hurricane Gil formed Wednesday in the Pacific, far off the southern tip of California, the The National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Maximum sustained winds Wednesday afternoon were 75 miles per hour and the storm was centered about 935 miles southwest of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, south of California.
No coastal warnings or watches were in effect.
The storm was moving at about 12 miles per hour and is expected to strengthen as it heads farther out to sea.
