MIAMI (October 15, 2012)--Hurricane Paul became a major Category 3 storm Monday in the Pacific off Mexico and a hurricane warning was issued for a swath of Baja California's western coastline, forecasters said.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Paul's maximum sustained winds increased to 120 miles per hour.
Late Monday afternoon Paul was centered about 415 miles southwest of the tip of the Baja peninsula and was moving north-northeast at 13 miles per hour.
The center said Tropical Storm Rafael, meanwhile, could reach hurricane strength in the Atlantic Monday night or Tuesday.
Rafael's maximum sustained winds were near 70 miles per hour and the storm was centered about 570 miles south of Bermuda, where a tropical storm warning was in effect.
Rafael was moving north at 10 miles per hour.
