Hurricane Sandy Strikes The Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas (October 25, 2012)--Hurricane Sandy barreled into the Bahamas Thursday after slashing its way across eastern Cuba where it ripped roofs off homes.

No deaths were reported in Cuba, but the storm left four people dead elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Forecasters are warning that it will probably cause a super storm in the U.S. next week, mixing with a winter storm and affecting the entire East Coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

The hurricane has top sustained winds of 105 miles per hour hour.

On one island in the southern Bahamas, the local Red Cross president said the only school is flooded, roofs have been damaged and power lines are down.

People across the Bahamas formed long lines to stock up on necessities ahead of Sandy, which is expected to churn through the central and northwest Bahamas by early Friday.

It could also bring tropical storm conditions along the southeastern coast of Florida by tomorrow morning.

With the storm expected to hit New Jersey with tropical-storm-force winds on Tuesday, forecasters say there's a 90 percent chance that most of the East Coast will get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday.
