LOS ANGELES (May 15, 2014) California sweltered through another record-breaking day Wednesday in the midst of a spring heat wave.
More than a dozen cities broke or tied high temperature records for the date Wednesday.
It was 99 in downtown Los Angeles, breaking the old record of 96 set 124 years ago.
San Diego's 93 beat the high of 87 set in 1956, and downtown San Francisco's 88 was a degree above the 1922 record.
Airports in Long Beach and Camarillo topped 100 degrees.
Coastal regions were often hotter than inland, with highs in the 90s.
A high-pressure system was expected to produce more scorching weather through Thursday as well as gusty and erratic winds.
The National Weather Service says red flag conditions of extreme fire danger will continue in many Southern California.
