SALT LAKE CITY (June 21, 2012)--Nineteen wildfires so far this year in Utah have been sparked by target shooting and authorities say the dry and windy conditions could mean even more fires.
Last year, guns sparked 24 wildfires, and 20 were ignited the year before, officials said.
There's only so much the state can do to prevent them.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that cities can restrict certain types of ammunition and targets for fire safety, but gun laws limit those regulations at the state level.
Elsewhere in the West, authorities in Colorado were investigating whether recreational shooting started a wildfire covering more than 1,100 acres near Lake George over the weekend.
