Level Of Texas Reservoir Continues To Drop

LAKEHILLS (January 7, 2013)--A reservoir outside of San Antonio has dropped so low that tourism in a surrounding community is drying up.

Medina Lake is at 9 percent capacity, down from about 13 percent capacity in mid-September.

The local water district stopped supplying water to farmers in September, but continues to send water to the San Antonio Water System.

Evaporation and seepage through the porous lakebed contribute to its continuing decline.

Residents of Lakehills, about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, say the receding level of the lake is hurting tourism, and real estate prices around the lake are falling along with the water level.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than 65 percent of Texas was in severe, extreme or exceptional drought last week.
