SAN ANGELO (March 22, 2014) Drag boat races in San Angelo have been delayed because of low water levels at Lake Nasworthy resulting from a lack of rain.
The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series races were originally scheduled for June 27-June 29, but the races have been moved to Sept. 12 to Sept. 14.
Organizers cited driver safety in delaying the races in a region still recovering from drought.
Six of the 10 public boat ramps are closed on Lake Nasworthy, which is at about 60 percent of capacity.
Phil Neighbors with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce says concerns include the width of Lake Nasworthy.
Area residents say canal banks continue to grow as lake water disappears, shrinking the competition area.
