Man’s Body Found In Flood Debris In New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (September 23, 2013)--The body of a man has been found in debris from flooding that brought widespread damage to much of New Mexico, the Catron Country Sheriff's Office said.

A hiker found the man’s body Saturday in a sand bar off of the San Francisco River near Alma in the Gila National Forest.

It appears he died in the flood, the sheriff’s office said.

Under Sheriff Ian Fletcher says it was not known if the body was that Howard Bassett, 83, the Arizona man reported missing last week after he was evacuated from the Silver Creek Inn in Mogollon and then failed to return to collect his belongings.

The sand bar where the body was found had debris from the flood.

The body was sent to the Officer of Medical Investigators for identification.
