GALAX, Va. (April 1, 2013)—A series of 17 separate crashes along a mountainous, foggy stretch of interstate near the Virginia-North Carolina border involving a total of 95 vehicles left three people dead, Virginia State Police said.
Another 25 people were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to minor.
The wrecks occurred at around 1:15 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 77 in southwest Virginia in the Fancy Gap Mountain area.
Message boards along the interstate had warned drivers of severe fog in the area, but authorities say most of the crashes occurred because drivers were traveling too fast for the conditions.
Traffic backed up for about 8 miles in the southbound lanes, which is where the wrecks occurred. Authorities also closed the northbound lanes so that emergency vehicles could get there.
