MIAMI (September 24, 2012)--Miriam has strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane well off Mexico's Baja California peninsula, forecasters said Monday.

National Hurricane Center Web Site

National Hurricane Center forecasters said Miriam was packing top sustained winds of 120 miles per hour and is classified as a major hurricane.

The hurricane formed a day earlier in the eastern Pacific and was centered about 410 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula.

The center says Miriam was moving northwest at 12 miles per hour.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, but swells should hit Baja's southern and western shore during the next couple of days.

In the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Nadine was meandering far from land with top sustained winds of about 50 miles per hour.

The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/UJKIg5 ) that five-year veteran Matthew Marin shot Brian Claunch on Saturday. Police say Marin and his partner felt threatened by Claunch, who was waving an object that turned out to be a silver pen.

The Chronicle reports that Marin had shot someone else in the line of duty three years ago.
